As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, many e-bike owners are eager to dust off their rides after months of winter hibernation. But before you hit the streets or trails, your bike deserves a proper spring checkup. Here’s how to get your e-bike ready for the season ahead.
Start by giving your e-bike a thorough cleaning. Dirt, salt, and dust that accumulated over winter can cause corrosion and wear on critical parts. Use a soft brush, mild detergent, and avoid spraying water directly onto electrical components. A clean bike is not only more pleasant to ride—it’s also easier to inspect for issues.
Next, check your battery. If it hasn’t been charged during storage, plug it in and let it reach full capacity. Inspect the connectors for corrosion or dirt, and if the battery is removable, clean the contact points with a dry cloth. Some brands like Bosch or Shimano recommend storing the battery at about 60% charge if the bike won’t be used for extended periods.
Tires can lose air over time, so inflate them to the recommended pressure. Inspect the sidewalls and tread for cracks or embedded debris. If your tires feel stiff or show signs of dry rot, it’s safer to replace them. Spring is also a good time to consider switching to more season-appropriate tires if you’ve been using winter or studded models.
Don’t forget your brakes. Squeeze both levers and check for responsiveness. If the brakes feel spongy or uneven, it could indicate air in the hydraulic system or worn brake pads. Also inspect the cables or hoses for signs of damage.
Lastly, test all electronic components—lights, display, motor assist settings—to ensure everything is working as expected. If you encounter any warning codes or reduced performance, consult your user manual or visit a certified shop.
A well-prepped e-bike sets the tone for a season of smooth, stress-free riding. A few preventative steps now can save you from bigger problems down the road.
