Dubbed “Hungry for Batteries,” this innovative program, developed by the non-profit People for Bikes, offers a practical approach to managing the life cycle of e-bike batteries. With projections indicating that e-bike sales in the U.S. will surpass 12 million by 2030, millions of lithium-ion batteries will eventually need proper disposal. This program aims to prevent these batteries from ending up in landfills by encouraging riders and retailers to participate in a seamless recycling process.

How the Program Works

The program integrates battery recycling into the e-bike ownership experience. Participating bike shops and brands are encouraged to inform new owners about the importance of recycling their batteries once they reach the end of their useful life. Riders can locate any of the 1,900 retail drop-off points nationwide via the program’s website, with more locations being added regularly.

Call2Recycle, a leader in battery recycling, collaborates with UPS to collect and transport the recycling kits from these drop-off points. UPS employees trained in safe handling ensure the batteries are delivered to facilities where they are responsibly processed. Impressively, the program also covers the cost of freight, removing financial barriers for participants.

Recognizing When to Recycle

Knowing when a battery is ready for recycling is crucial. Signs include extended charging times, difficulty holding a charge, and fluctuating power output. On average, high-quality lithium-ion batteries have a lifespan of 2–5 years, depending on their use and maintenance.
